World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus narrowly escaped an Israeli airstrike yesterday (December 26).

He narrowly escaped an aerial bombardment at Sanaa International Airport in the Yemeni capital. Two people were also killed in the attack.

In a press release issued by Tedros, he said, “We were in Yemen to discuss the release of UN staff and to assess the health and humanitarian situation.

About two hours ago, we were waiting to board a flight at the airport in Sanaa when our airport was attacked. One of our flight attendants was injured.

At least two people were reportedly killed at the airport. The runway was damaged.

We had to wait until the damage to the airport was repaired. My condolences to the families of those killed in this attack.”

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack. In his post, he said, “A member of the UN Humanitarian Air Service team was also injured in the attack on the airport.

International law must be respected. Civilians and humanitarian workers should never be targeted.

These airstrikes are extremely dangerous. "I urge all parties to cease military operations and exercise utmost restraint," he said.

The Israeli military said it targeted infrastructure, power plants and ports used by Yemen's Houthi rebels, including Sanaa International Airport.
