Ukrainian forces have captured a North Korean soldier who fought in support of Russia.
South Korea’s intelligence agency confirmed the information on Friday.
The soldier, who was captured injured, is said to be the first North Korean prisoner of war captured since December 2022. A photo of this was circulated on Telegram.
According to information from Ukraine and South Korea, more than 10,000 North Korean soldiers have been sent to support Russia in the war against Ukraine. However, Russia and North Korea have not confirmed this.
“Capturing North Korean soldiers and exchanging Ukrainian prisoners of war with Russia would be beneficial for Ukraine. This is only the beginning,” said Yang Uk, a behavioral expert at the Asan Institute for Research.
Ukraine says the North Korean soldiers were given false Russian ID cards.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Zelensky released a video showing Russian soldiers burning the bodies of North Korean soldiers without identifying them.
Ukrainian and South Korean intelligence agencies have reported that the soldiers were sent from the 11th Storm Corps, considered North Korea's elite force.
Zelensky said that more than 3,000 North Korean soldiers have died in the Kursk region of Russia so far.
