China has reportedly approved the construction of the world's largest dam on the Brahmaputra river in Tibet, near the Indian border, at a cost of $137 billion.
World's largest dam on the Brahmaputra river
The Chinese government has approved the construction of a hydroelectric project on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo river, the Tibetan name for the Brahmaputra, a report said.
The dam will be built in a large valley in the Himalayas where the Brahmaputra river makes a U-turn in Arunachal Pradesh and then Bangladesh.
The total investment in the dam could exceed one trillion yuan (US$137 billion), making it the largest dam in the world, including China's Three Gorges Dam and the Hong Kong-based South China Dam.
China has already commissioned the massive $1.5 billion Jam hydroelectric dam in Tibet in 2015.
China has now decided to build the Brahmaputra dam in its five-year plan from 2021 to 2025.
If China builds the dam, China will gain control over the Brahmaputra River.
India is concerned that a large amount of water could be released from the border areas and released into India.
It is also worth noting that India is also building a dam across the Brahmaputra in Arunachal Pradesh.
