A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale has been reported to have struck 54 km off the island nation of Vanuatu in the Pacific Ocean.
Tsunami warning issued
The United States Geological Survey reported that it occurred today (17) just off the coast of Vanuatu.
It struck 30 km west of Port Vila at a depth of 43 km.
As a result, a tsunami warning has been issued for other surrounding islands and New Zealand following the earthquake, the US Tsunami Warning Center said.
It is also reported that dangerous tsunami waves are possible within 300 km of the epicenter of the earthquake.
The island is a place consisting of 80 islands with a population of about 330,000. It is noteworthy that the tsunami warning issued has caused panic among all the people.
