27 sentenced to death

A Vietnamese court on Friday sentenced 27 people to death for smuggling over 600kg of drugs, including heroin, ketamine and methamphetamine.

Notable among those sentenced to death is the leader of a notorious drug gang, Vu Hoang Anh, alias Oanh Ha.

The court found that the 35-member gang smuggled 626kg of drugs from Cambodia to Vietnam between March 2018 and November 2022.

The other eight members of the gang were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 20 years to life.

The court considered the case to be a “significantly serious cross-border drug trafficking operation.”

The group used pseudonyms such as “Colombia” and “Moscow” to evade surveillance, using encrypted messaging platforms such as Signal.

The case highlights the ongoing challenge of drug trafficking in Vietnam and the severity of the penalties imposed for such crimes.
