Sri Lanka welcomes 2 million tourists - Tourism sector celebrates

 



Two million tourists have arrived in Sri Lanka so far in 2024, the Tourism Development Authority said.

The Sri Lanka Tourism Ministry announced today (December 26) that it is set to celebrate the arrival of two million foreign tourists for the year 2024.


The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) is planning to hold a special function to commemorate the milestone at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake this morning, Deputy Minister of Tourism Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe said.


As of December 22, Sri Lanka has welcomed 1,966,256 international visitors since the beginning of the year.



In December alone, 161,383 foreign tourists arrived, with India accounting for the highest number of arrivals at 35,131.


Also in December, 22,637 tourists from Russia, 12,822 from the United Kingdom, 9,998 from Germany and 8,646 from Australia arrived in Sri Lanka.


India was the top source market with 399,224 visitors throughout 2024, followed by Russia with 189,289 visitors.


The UK sent 172,404 tourists, while Germany, China and France sent 131,379, 120,268 and 86,440 tourists respectively.


It is noteworthy that Professor Ranasinghe also pointed out that Sri Lanka is on track to surpass 2.1 million foreign arrivals by the end of this year.
