NGOs to be closed if they hire women: Taliban warning

The Taliban have ordered the closure of NGOs in Afghanistan that employ women.

NGOs to be closed

The Taliban government has ordered all national and international NGOs in Afghanistan to be closed if they hire women.

The latest order comes two years after the Taliban ordered NGOs to stop hiring women, saying they violated the rules of wearing the Islamic hijab.

In an official letter posted on social media on Sunday evening, the Afghan Ministry of Economy issued a stern warning.

Any NGO that violates the order will immediately lose its permit to operate in the country, the letter said.

The ministry stressed that it has the authority to register, coordinate and supervise all activities of all domestic and foreign organizations operating in Afghanistan.

This is a significant escalation in the Taliban’s ongoing violations of women’s rights and freedoms.

It completely prohibits women from working in any institution not directly controlled by the Taliban government.

This latest move by the Taliban further isolates Afghanistan from the international community and exacerbates the humanitarian crisis within the country.
