Hundreds of North Korean soldiers fighting on behalf of Russia in Ukraine have been killed, a US military official has said.
North Korean soldiers killed
A US military official has said that "hundreds" of North Korean soldiers fighting alongside Russian forces in the Kursk region of Ukraine have suffered casualties and injuries.
The official, who did not want to be named, said that the estimate includes a range of injuries ranging from minor to fatal.
Soldiers of all ranks have been reported to have been affected in the military clash.
According to intelligence agencies in the US, Ukraine and South Korea, more than 10,000 North Korean soldiers have been sent to Russia to bolster Russia's war effort.
The soldiers, described as "hardly trained in combat", are stationed in the Kursk region, which has seen intense fighting since Ukraine's surprise invasion last August.
The US official said the high casualties were due to the inexperience of North Korean soldiers.
The claims came after Pentagon spokesman Major General Pat Ryder confirmed that North Korean soldiers were involved in the fighting in the Kursk region, causing deaths and injuries.
Ukrainian military intelligence reported that North Korean forces had suffered “significant losses” in the Kursk region, with at least 30 soldiers killed and wounded.
