Last August, a little girl named Sarah died after being beaten by her father and stepmother.
Sarah’s father said that she was punished legally, but that they were beaten too much.
Following Sarah’s death, campaigns were launched to ban parents from spanking children.
Should parents spank their children?
However, campaigners against spanking have been disappointed after the British government said that there is no plan to ban spanking in the UK.
The Labour Party had previously said that it would support a ban on spanking.
In 2022, the current British Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, said that if such a ban were to be introduced in the UK, he would like to extend it to the whole country.
In England and Northern Ireland, parents are allowed to spank their children as a form of punishment for misbehaving children.
However, it is noteworthy that the Children Act 2004 prohibits beating to the point of causing bodily injury.
