Metal particles in Canadian bread products, FDA in recall

The FDA is taking action to recall bread products from a popular food company in Canada.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced last month that it has recalled two bread products made by Canadian food manufacturer Stuyver's Bread.

The FDA has issued the recall, its second-highest Class II hazard alert, because the two bread products may contain metal particles.

The recall began on November 13.

The contaminated products are Pull Apart Holiday Rolls and Artisan Multigrain Baguette.

The products were sold in California, Connecticut and Washington. A total of 1,777 products have been recalled from the market.

Metal particle risk

If metal particles enter the body, they can cause scratches or punctures in the esophagus, stomach and intestines.

The particles can get stuck in the throat and damage teeth.

In addition, metal particles have the potential to carry pathogens into the body.

FDA statement

The FDA defines a Class II recall as “a temporary or medically treatable injury, but not a significant risk.”

The FDA will ban products containing metal particles between 0.3 inches and 1 inch in length.

Consumer advisory

The FDA said the recall is still ongoing.

Consumers are advised to return or discard any products suspected of containing metal particles.
