Flights could be further delayed... Britain's major airports warn

Britain's major airports have warned that flights could be further delayed as heavy fog is forecast across the UK.

It will be cloudy and overcast across much of England and Wales today, with a chance of fog and drizzle.

More than 20,000 people were affected by flight delays yesterday due to heavy fog, with major airports warning that the situation could continue today.

Gatwick Airport said temporary air traffic restrictions had been imposed as the fog disrupted normal operations.

London Gatwick Airport said some flights could be delayed throughout the day and apologised for any inconvenience. Passengers were also asked to contact their airlines for further information.

A Ryanair flight due to land at Teesside Airport was diverted 300 miles to Dublin yesterday. Meanwhile, millions of people are affected by the closure of two of Britain's busiest railway stations for a total of nine days.

London's Liverpool Street station is closed until January 2 for engineering work. Paddington station on the other side of central London is also closed until tomorrow.

Rain and heavy snow are expected on New Year's Eve. The first week of the New Year is expected to be colder than Christmas for most Britons. A yellow rain warning will be in place until Monday, December 30.
