Canada has announced a $1.3 billion (Canadian dollars) border security plan amid the threat of tariffs from US President-elect Trump.
The plan will focus on improving US-Canada border security, surveillance, intelligence and the use of advanced technology.
Key features of the plan
- Helicopters, drones, watchtowers and sniffer dogs will be used.
- A joint strike force will be created to combat transnational organized crime.
- Changes to immigration laws will allow Canadian officials to revoke or suspend documents in cases such as voting irregularities.
- New laws will be implemented to speed up the processing of asylum claims.
Background to US pressure
The US has been pressuring Canada to secure its border.
Canada created the plan after Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada.
Last year, 23,000 people were arrested at the US-Canada border, double the number from the previous year.
