Britain warned to destroy Asma al-Assad's passport

Britain has been warned about the wife of the fugitive Syrian president.

The British government has been warned not to allow Asma al-Assad, the wife of the fugitive Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, to live in the UK.

Asma's passport should be destroyed and she should be permanently removed from the UK, as she could divorce her husband and re-enter the UK.

Asma sought asylum in Russia with her husband last month.

Asma al-Assad's family background

Asma al-Assad, who is of British descent, grew up in north-west London.

In the current situation, Asma is reportedly planning to return to the UK.

She is said to be planning to enter the UK under the pretext of needing cancer treatment.

Assad family ban

Asma was placed under economic sanctions by the British government in 2012 over the atrocities committed by the Assad family during their rule in Syria. Her assets in the UK have also been frozen.

These sanctions remain in place after Britain left the European Union (Brexit).

“It is not right to allow the Assad family’s wife to live in the UK while accepting the millions of direct and covert atrocities committed by the family,” said former Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick.

“Asma Assad will not be welcome in the UK,” Foreign Secretary David Lammy said firmly.
