An urgent warning has been issued to WhatsApp users in the UK about a scam.
An urgent warning for British WhatsApp users
A woman named Kasi Reid, who lives in the city of Coventry, England, received a voice call on WhatsApp.
The caller claimed to be from a WhatsApp group for parents of children studying at her son’s school.
The person said that he had organized a party and asked her to click on a code he had sent to join the party.
If Kasi had clicked on the code as requested, the person would have taken control of Kasi’s account.
But, fortunately, Kasi did not click on the code. Therefore, such a scam is happening and British people have been warned to be careful if they receive any such calls.
Expert advice
Hayley Hassall, an industry expert, explains how to avoid such scams.
First, Hayley says, pay attention to the country the call is coming from.
One good thing is that WhatsApp will indicate whether the person sending you the message is in your contact list or in a group you've joined.
You can also restrict your WhatsApp account to only receive messages from people in your contact list.
The only thing is, when you receive a message, don't respond immediately, think about it and act on it, says Hayley.
Even if it appears to be from a friend, call them to make sure they sent the message.
