The government in Albania on Saturday, December 21, banned TikTok for a year.
The decision was announced to increase the safety of children in schools.
The prime minister, who met with parents and teachers across the country, said that TikTok will be banned after a year.
14-year-old boy killed
TikTok will be completely shut down in Albania for a year, Prime Minister Rama said.
No one will have TikTok. Prime Minister Rama cited an incident last month in which a 14-year-old boy was stabbed to death by his friend, citing reports that the attack took place after an argument on social media.
Videos justifying the attack were also found on TikTok.
TikTok immediately sought an explanation from the government about the ban.
A TikTok spokesperson said there was no evidence that the boy who was killed or the person who killed him had a TikTok account.
The videos related to the incident were reportedly not posted on TikTok, but on some other social media app.
The decision to ban TikTok in Albania also reflects a trend of increasing restrictions on children's social media use in Europe.
Countries such as France, Germany and Belgium have taken several steps to protect children from online threats.
Australia recently completely banned social media for children under the age of 16.
This is one of the strictest rules in the world for large companies like Meta and TikTok.
