At the funeral of a police officer who was killed in a shooting in the United States, the city's mayor has announced that he will not attend the death's family's wishes.
A police officer who was shot dead
On November 4th, 26-year-old police officer Enrique Martinez was shot and killed on the south side of Chicago.
His last rites will be held on Monday. Mayor Brendan Johnson will not be welcome at the officer's funeral, police union president protests.
However, Mayor Brendan Johnson will attend the funeral, his office said.
"It is the Mayor's duty to support the entire Chicago Police Department, especially in times of grief," the statement said.
Following this, a spokesperson for Enrique's family said, 'Enrique's family certainly does not want the mayor at any ceremony.'
I am honoring the request
That means Brandon Johnson, who has been labeled the nation's most hated mayor, will stay home rather than attend the funeral, Enrique's family said on Friday.
And when Enrique's mother spoke, she said, "If the mayor really wants to honor Enrique's family, he should respect the family's wishes. This is about their wishes."
At this point the mayor changed his mind. He has announced that he will not attend the funeral of the slain officer.
In his statement, he said, "I have heard from the family and am honoring their request. I do not plan to attend a dignified funeral."
