The National Bird of the United States
The bald eagle has been unofficially recognized as the national bird of the United States for many years, but now the bald eagle has been officially declared the national bird of the United States.
The national bird became official after US President Joe Biden signed the national bird bill into law on Christmas Day.
The bald eagle has long been a powerful symbol of the United States.
The bald eagle has been featured on the Great Seal of the United States since 1782.
Despite its importance in the national image, it has not yet had official status as a national bird.
Opposition and Pride
For nearly 250 years, we have called the eagle our national bird, even though it was not the national bird, as Jack Davis, vice president of the National Eagle Project, has said, “But now the title is official, and no bird is more deserving.”
While the initiative has received widespread praise, there have been some obstacles to its official recognition.
Notably, Founding Father Benjamin Franklin objected, calling the bird “a symbol of bad morals.” Bald eagles, a symbol of strength, courage, freedom, and immortality, have a special place in American culture.
