Sri Lankans stranded on an island for three years
On October 3, 2021, a boat carrying Sri Lankan Tamils who set out for Canada got stranded in the middle of the ocean and was rescued by the British Navy.
However, they were not taken to Britain, but to the British overseas territory of Diego Garcia.
They were all trapped on the island for about three years.
Many were housed in a small space, in one tent, with some men being attacked and women being physically abused, and young children living in fear, with no proper protection for them and their parents.
Good news
In this situation, most of the Sri Lankan Tamils who were stranded on the island of Diego Garcia for three years have been brought back to the UK.
They have been granted permission to stay in the UK for six months and will be provided with financial assistance by the British Home Office, the BBC reported.
Meanwhile, those Sri Lankan Tamils who were sent to Rwanda for medical treatment are also due to be brought back to the UK today.
However, with only three people facing charges, they are expected to remain on the island of Diego Garcia.
