Spanish staff repeatedly insulted British people: Plaintiff

A former embassy employee has filed a lawsuit alleging that colleagues insulted British people.

Dual citizenship

Lidia Lorenzo, a Spanish and British citizen, worked at the Spanish embassy in Belgravia Square, London.

Lorenzo joined the embassy in 2008 as the ambassador's social secretary. But she has now alleged that she was subjected to recommendations to restrict access to certain documents because of her dual citizenship.

She also said that Spanish embassy staff made derogatory comments about the UK government and the British people in general.

Important ruling

The Times reported that the charges came after Spain tried to overturn Lorenzo’s discrimination claim on the grounds that embassy staff were exempt from UK employment law requirements.

However, after the Spanish government’s bid was rejected, Lorenzo’s claims will now be heard by an employment tribunal.

The judge said that if Lorenzo’s case could not be resolved, it should be heard on its merits by the employment tribunal without further delay.

Ryan Bradshaw, from the legal firm that is representing Lorenzo, told the media that the appeal judges were pleased with the decision and that it was a significant ruling that reinforces that discriminatory practices in any workplace should not be considered above the law.
