Germany orders six submarines

Germany has decided to increase its submarine order count to six (three times).

Germany already has 6 submarines. It had ordered 2 more submarines in 2021.

In this context, Germany has decided to increase its submarine contract count to six (three times) in a joint project with Norway to produce modern submarines.

The contract has been renewed with ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.

Initially, in 2021, Germany and Norway signed a contract with ThyssenKrupp to purchase six 212 Common Design (CD) submarines worth 5.5 billion euros.

Currently, Germany is planning to buy four more ships, for a total of six, and Norway is planning to buy two more.

ThyssenKrupp will start production in September 2023. Germany will receive one ship per year from 2032 to 2037.

Similarly, Norway is expected to receive its first ship by 2029.

Highlights

The 212CD submarine is approximately 74 meters long and 10 meters wide, with a displacement of 2,500 tons. It is based on the previous model, the 212A.

The project will strengthen cooperation between Germany and Norway, reduce costs and increase efficiency in operations and maintenance. The project is expected to improve security in line with NATO.
