276,000 people affected by heavy rains - Where is the heaviest rainfall today?

 




According to the Disaster Management Center, a total of 80,642 families in 166 Divisional Secretariat divisions have been affected, while 20 districts across the country have been severely affected by the unseasonal weather.

The Disaster Management Center reported that a total of 276,550 people have been affected, and 16,553 people from 5,305 families have taken shelter in safe places.


Furthermore, the Irrigation Department has warned that flood conditions will continue in low-lying areas around reservoirs.


Irrigation Engineer G.W.A. Sakura Dildara has pointed out that there is a possibility of increased flooding in the surrounding areas as the water level of the Teduru Oya and the Mahaweli River has risen.

The Meteorological Department said that a deep depression formed in the southwest Bay of Bengal and lay 100 kilometers northeast of Trincomalee at 2.30 am on November 28, 2024.


It is expected to move slowly and approach the east coast of Sri Lanka in a north-northwesterly direction and intensify further into a cyclonic storm today (28).


Under the influence of the system, the sky is expected to be cloudy in most parts of the island and heavy rain and strong winds are expected in the Northern Province and Trincomalee District.


Occasional showers or thundershowers will occur in the Northern Province and Trincomalee District. Heavy rain exceeding 150 mm may occur at some places.


Heavy rain exceeding 100 mm may occur at some places in the North-Central and North-Western Provinces and in the Matale and Kegalle Districts.


Strong winds of 60-70 kmph are likely to occur at times in the Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces and in the Trincomalee district.


Strong winds of 40-50 kmph are likely to occur in other parts of the island.


Therefore, the public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize the potential damage caused by temporary strong winds and lightning strikes during thunderstorms.
