Messi will participate in the FIFA Club World Cup with Inter Miami.

Inter Miami, a Major League Soccer team, has been announced as the 2025 Fifa Club World Cup expansion.

The MLS Supporters Shield, awarded to the club with the best regular game season, will be awarded to Inter Miami, a 32-team tournament set to take place in the United States from 15 June to 3 July 2025. The tournament will feature 12 teams from Europe, six from South America, 12 from Asia, Africa, and North America, with the final two spots going to Oceania and the United States. Inter Miami, co-owned by David Beckham, won the Shield.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has announced that the United States' Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suarez are deserved participants in the new Fifa Club World Cup 2025. The tournament will feature representatives from Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Paris St-Germain, Inter Milan, Porto, and Benfica. The 32nd spot in the tournament will be awarded to the winner of the 2024 Copa Libertadores. Matches will be played across eight venues in the US, including Inter Miami's Hard Rock stadium, with the final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Fifa's decision to expand the Club World Cup competition has sparked criticism from clubs and players, especially after Uefa expanded the Champions League and Europa League group stages. Global players' union Fifpro and the European Leagues body filed a complaint to the European Commission in July, protesting Fifa's "abuse of dominance" in the game. The last edition of the tournament in 2023 saw Manchester City win the trophy.
