A rise in reports about cyber fraud and internet scams: SLCERT

Over the previous nine months, the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) received close to 8,000 complaints about Facebook problems, cyber frauds, and online scams, according to SLCERT Senior Information Security Engineer Charuka Damunupola.

He informed them that there had been reports of harassment and the establishment of phony social media profiles. There were almost 1,100 complaints about cyber fraud and internet scams. In September, there were around 200 reports of one-time password (OTP) sharing events, he claimed. The Senior Information Security Engineer at SLCERT advised against disclosing OTP codes to third parties.
