India to supply natural gas to Sri Lanka
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that India plans to supply liquefied natural gas to Sri Lankan power plants and is working to connect the power grids of the two countries and lay a petroleum pipeline between the neighboring countries.
Prime Minister Modi made this statement while meeting the press with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in New Delhi.
Prime Minister Modi said that India will cooperate with Sri Lanka on a special digital identity project.
He highlighted India's strong support for Sri Lanka's development.
"India has provided $ 5 billion in loans and grants to Sri Lanka so far. We have cooperation in all 25 districts of Sri Lanka, and our selection of projects is always based on the development priorities of the neighboring countries," he said.
He also announced India’s decision to provide assistance for the reconstruction of the Maho-Anuradhapura railway signalling system and the Kankesanthurai port.
Prime Minister Modi further outlined new initiatives under India’s development cooperation with Sri Lanka.
“From next year, monthly scholarships will be provided to 200 students from Jaffna and Eastern Province universities. Over the next five years, 1,500 Sri Lankan civil servants will be trained in India,” he said.
India’s involvement will also be in the sectors of housing, renewable energy, agriculture, dairy, fisheries and infrastructure development.
The Sri Lankan President arrived in India last Sunday, his first foreign visit since assuming office in September.
