50,000-year-old mammoth calf found in Yakutia, Russia

Scientists in Yakutia, Russia, have made a groundbreaking discovery.

The remains of a baby mammoth are more than 50,000 years old.

The extremely well-preserved specimen is considered one of the most important mammoth discoveries in history.

The discovery was made in the Batagaika region of Verkhoyansk district in the summer of 2024.

Locals’ quick response

Locals accidentally discovered the front of a mammoth’s body emerging from a melting glacier.

They cleverly preserved the remains in the glacier and immediately informed scientists.

Subsequent excavations also uncovered the back of the body.

Mammoth named Yana

The mammoth, affectionately named Yana, was about a year old when it died.

Yana, which weighed 180 kilograms and stood 120 centimeters tall, provides valuable information about the lifestyle of these ancient creatures.

The mammoth's head is so well preserved that it will provide unprecedented information about its anatomy, physiology and feeding habits, scientists say.
