BREAKING NEWS Yahya Sinwar was killed in a battle with Israeli soldiers in Gaza, according to Hamas.

"Escalating Conflict: Sinwar's Death, Hezbollah's New Phase, and Rising Casualties in Gaza"

Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was killed in Gaza by Israeli forces, defending Palestine until his last moments. Israeli captives in Gaza will not return until the war on Gaza ends and Israeli forces withdraw from the besieged territory. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claims this is not the end of the war in Gaza. Lebanon's Hezbollah is entering a new phase in its fight against Israeli troops, introducing new weapons. Since October 7, 2023, at least 42,500 people have been killed and 99,546 wounded in Israeli attacks in Gaza.

The president of Iran sends Sinwar his sympathies.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian condolenced the killing of Yahya Sinwar, Head of the Hamas Political Bureau, and condemned Israel for his death. He expressed pain and heartbreak for freedom lovers, particularly the people of Palestine, and highlighted the ongoing atrocities of the occupying Zionist regime. Pezeshkian praised Sinwar's heroic fight and emphasized the struggle against aggression and the restoration of freedom to the rightful owners of occupied lands as a noble cause. He vowed to not stop the struggle against aggression.

Israel's Prime Minister, Netanyahu, has repeatedly aimed to destroy Hamas and bring hostages home, but neither has been achieved. A year of war has killed at least 42,000 Palestinians and left much of Gaza in ruins. The remaining hostages are not free, and Hamas is fighting and sometimes killing Israeli troops. Killing Sinwar was the victory Israel wanted, but until Netanyahu can claim that other war aims have been accomplished, the war will continue.

Yahya Sinwar, born in 1962 in a refugee camp in Khan Younis, was captured by Israel from Egypt in the 1967 Middle East war. His family were among over 700,000 Palestinians who fled or were expelled from their homes by Israeli forces in the 1948 war. Sinwar was convicted by Israel of killing four Palestinian informers in his 20s and was released as one of more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners who were swapped in 2011 for a single Israel soldier, Gilad Shalit.

On 7 October last year, Sinwar and his men inflicted Israel's worst-ever defeat and a collective trauma that is still deeply felt. Families of the remaining 101 hostages in Gaza gathered in Tel Aviv, urging the Israeli government to launch a new negotiation to get their people home. Einav Zangauker, mother of hostage Matan Zangauker, appealed to Netanyahu to lay out a new Israeli initiative, even at the expense of ending the war. "We will not give up until everyone returns," she said.
